The [Maronite Roman Catholic] patriarch enjoys the full support of the Vatican and Pope John Paul II. But today the Vatican's approach to Lebanon is made harder and more difficult by the internecine war between Christian brothers and sisters. Vatican diplomacy in Lebanon is guided by the principle that Lebanon must be saved as an example of co-existence in order to be able to protect its Christian populations throughout the region.

The predicament of Lebanon's Maronites is part of a general crisis of identity in the Middle East. Arab Christians today are at a crossroads. The last bastion of Christianity in the Levant is crumbling under the heavy blows of those who claim to be Christ's followers. In addition, Arab Christians and Lebanon's Maronites are facing an aggressive wave of Islamic fundamentalism coming from Iran and the Israeli-occupied territories.
