SLEASY POLITICS
Observes Americans United Executive Director Barry W. Lynn,
"Ralph Reed and Pat Robertson have been playing a slick political game for some time now. Reed presents a moderate, pragmatic face to the news media and general public, while Robertson continues to feed his followers red meat. The American people should not be fooled. The Christian Coalition remains a theocratic movement bent on imposing it's narrow religious viewpoint on everyone."
"It is particularly hypocritical," Lynn continued, "for Ralph Reed to remain silent when the boss of his organization uses the same shrill rhetoric Reed claims is inappropriate for others. As the Bible itself notes Ñ don't criticize the speck in someone else's eye when there's a beam in your own."
Americans United staffer Robert Boston has written a new book, The Most Dangerous Man in America?: Pat Robertson and the Rise of the Christian Coalition [Prometheus Books]. The volume thoroughly documents Robertson's continuing record of intolerance and extremism and Ralph Reed's efforts to hide that record. The book notes that Reed's campaign to moderate the Coalition's image and direct its attention away from abortion and homosexuality seems unpopular with its own activists. The group's dues paying membership fell from 1994 to 1995.
