On Friday, John Paul granted an audience to a second Nobel Peace Prize winner -- Bishop Carlos Filipe Belo of East Timor. Belo shared this year's award with an East Timor activist, two years after Arafat shared his with fellow Middle East peacemakers.
The pope congratulated the bishop, adding to previous Vatican encouragement for largely Catholic East Timor, which has resisted Indonesian control.
The pontiff told the bishop
"he hoped the Nobel would be a shield ... to work even more for the peace of East Timor,"
Belo said.
