CATHOLICS ASKED FOR PLATFORM HELP

The head of the Republican platform committee has urged individual [Roman] Catholics to join in developing the parts of the 1996 platform by sending him their ideas.

"I encourage all [Roman] Catholics to participate in helping to define the Republican Party for the next four years," said Rep. Henry J. Hyde, R-Ill., in an open letter.

[Roman] "Catholics are a powerful voice of moral authority and fulfill a growing leadership role in the Republican Party," he added, noting that currently there are nine U.S. senators, 55 members of Congress and nine governors who are Republican and [Roman] Catholic.

Hyde, a [Roman] Catholic, heads the committee that will develop the Republican platform and present it for approval by delegates to the Republican National Convention in August.

"Our country faces moral, economic, social and foreign challenges," Hyde said in his letter. "As a [Roman] Catholic, I believe the basic principles of [Roman] Catholic teaching are ideologically, philosophically and morally aligned with those of the Republican Party."
