Air Carriers Who Used to Fly the Alaska Skies....
Here is a collection of images I've downloaded (and scanned) of different carriers
who no longer traverse the Alaska Skies..Some of these carriers were the foundation
of aviation, others flourished for a few years after their Alaskan start, but
foundered after the onset of de-regulation. Some, of course, were merged with
other carriers still flying Alaska Skies.
PAN AM....First into the jet age.....Pan Am had an extensive history in
Alaska...flying everything from Fokkers to LoadStars to DC-3's/4's/6's/7's....The
first Jet flight in and out of Alaska was somewhere around 1957,58... I flew on these
B707's as an unaccompanied minor between Annette Island and Seattle.

Western Airlines got into the Alaska Market by merging with PNA...Pacific
Northern Airlines, who flew between Anchorage, Kodiak, Juneau, Annnette Island
(Ketchikan), and Seattle...Mostly Western flew the steady B727-200 on the Alaska run,
with the exception of the flight which was probably the favorite of Alaskan's...the
NON-STOP, Anchorage to HONOLULU. Western was acquired by Delta, who still flies
to Anchorage and Fairbanks.

Southern Air Transport, the county's LARGEST Herc operator after AIA, came
to Alaska to fill the void of cargo lift after the demise of Mark Air. SAT flew
charters out of Anchorage and Fairbanks to points all over Alaska. However, in 1998,
Southern Air Transport parked their aircraft in the desert and shut down operations.
This is N901SJ, on final, in Africa. 901 flew out of both Anchorage and Fairbanks

PACIFIC ALASKA AIRLINES (PAK), started as an all-cargo carrier, with the
"normal" Alaskan assortment of C-46's and Douglas aircraft. When the DEW-line
support contract came open, requiring a FAIRBANKS BASE, and F-27 Type aircraft, PAK
acquired one, re-registering it as N222DG. It flew the DEW-line for 3-4 years, and
during the great Air Cargo depression of the 80's finally shut down.
This shot of N222DG is at, I think, Paine Field, Washington (Everett)
