Painting full time for the past 4 years, Veleta Murphy has focused
on becoming a professional artist. Her watercolor paintings have appeared in several shows including the Patterns of Influence 2004, the New Horizons miniature show 2000, 2001, 2002, and 2003, and the Fairbanks Watercolor Society show 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004. In 2003, she had a solo show at a local restaurant, Desserts First.
Growing up in the Panhandle of Texas, she is fascinated by the
diversity of the Alaskan landscape and it is her main topic. She is also exploring the science fiction art using watercolor. Although Veleta only took up watercolor painting about 5 years ago, she studied art at Stephen F. Austin University. At that time, she painted mostly in oils. She has always drawn even as a child.
Wearable art is another area that Veleta explores. Her
embroidery has won several awards at the Tanana Valley Fairs. She creates all of her own designs. She also tats jewelry, creates wire and stone jewelry and crochets.
Veleta has been a substitute teacher, high school special
education teacher, an Infant Learning Specialist in the Alaskan Bush, and currently works part-time for Fairbanks North Star Borough Library.
